The Winnie the Pooh Handpainted Chess Set

Based on the characters created by A.A. Milne and beautifully illustrated by E.H. Shepard, SACs designers have recreated the wonderful world of Winnie the Pooh for chess lovers young and old. Translated into almost every known language, Winnie the Pooh and his friends have universal appeal.

In 1966 Walt Disney brought the stories to film and in 1977 the first feature length animated film of Pooh, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, was released. All the main characters from the stories are represented in this set from Winnie the Pooh, Kanga and Owl to Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet.

SAC has represented the King by Winnie the Pooh himself and the queen by Kanga, the sweet caring mother of baby Roo. The owl, supposedly the wisest creature in 100 Acre Wood, is the bishop and Eeyore, the gloomy grey donkey, is the knight. Tigger the bouncy is the Rook and Piglet, Poohs best friend, is the pawn. The House of Staunton Zagreb '59 Chess Set in Genuine Ebony

From 6 September to 31 October of 1959, eight of the world?s strongest Grandmasters competed in a powerful quadruple Round-Robin Tournament, played in Bled, Zagreb and Belgrade, Yugoslavia, to determine the challenger for the crown of World Champion currently held by Soviet Grandmaster Michael Botvinnik. Amongst those competing were the young American Robert James "Bobby" Fischer .

To commemorate that classic struggle, The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Zagreb '59 Series Chessmen, a stunningly chess accurate reproduction of one of the most popular chess sets used in the major International tournaments during the 1950s and 1960s. We have taken the liberty of making some minor modifications, such as replacing the ball finial atop the King with a more traditional cross to conform to modern Western tournament praxis.

This full-tournament sized set features a 4.0" King, weighs an impressive ounces and includes 4 Queens. The design and feel of these Chessmen make them ideal for both Tournament and Rapid Play (Blitz) Chess. It is designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining the elegance that has become the hallmark of all House of Staunton Chessmen.

Our St George antique reproduction chess set originates from the early 1800s and was named after the St. George Chess Club in England. This particular pattern and many very similar to it, were commonly used for chess including competitive play during the 19th century. Several companies produced this chess set in a variety of materials, sizes, and designs.

We chose this particular pattern because of the overall beauty of the profile and the handsome knights. As one would imagine, these pieces require a great deal of careful turning to reproduce the shape and detail in its original form. Playing chess will take on an extra charm and sense of nostalgia as you move the pieces and the game unfolds.

The boxwood pieces are stained to create the rich amber patina you would find on a real antique chess set a hundred years old. Both ebony and boxwood pieces are finished in a soft satin varnish for an antique look. The pieces are weighted for stability on the chess board and the bottoms are covered in green billiard cloth so that they slide easily from square to square.

A tradition of craftsmenship...how each decoy is created. All Loon Lake Decoy Company Waterfowl Decoys, Upland Bird Sculptures and Framing Cameos start as an original solid Tupelo Gum or Basswood wood carving by Master Carver Sam Nottleman. From each original, a mold is made which the hand-cast reproductions are then pulled. A variety of casting mediums along with a resin binder are used to individually hand cast each sculpture. After casting and curing, each sculpture is subject to many more hand operations to remove any seam lines or casting blemishes. This work insures each sculpture captures every detail of Sam's original. After finishing the raw sculpture, our staff of talented artists hand paints each one using heavy-body acrylic paints. These paints are fade resistant, insuring your Loon Lake sculpture will become a treasured family heirloom. Next, the glass taxidermy eyes are added to many of the sculptures, then the ultra suede base and the Certificate of Authenticity. The Certificate of Authenticity adds to each decoys collectability. The certificate features the embossed signature of Master Carver Sam Nottleman, the sculpture name, and the limited edition number. Each sculpture requires hours of hand work by the combined skills of the carver, craftsmen and artists before it is complete. The Staunton Pattern chessmen were first offered to the public for sale by Jaques of London in the Fall of 1849 and quickly became the standard for serious tournament competition.
These chessmen are a reintroduction of a design produced by the Jaques firm between 1850 and 1851. The form, board presence and exquisite craftsmanship of these magnificent chessmen have been recaptured and are offered to you on a very limited basis.

The pieces are crafted from premium Boxwood and jet-black Ebony. The full Tournament-size King stands 4.0" tall with a 1.875"diameter base. Each piece is very heavily weighted and is fitted with handmade English leather cushions with beautiful gold-blocked Jaques branding. The visual impact of each piece is striking, combining both robustness and grace. From our Staunton by Design collection, the Gotham offers both collectors and chess set connoisseurs a new and exciting design that will prove a favorite. The Gotham strays from pure Staunton with its unique features and lines that are best described as art deco. The pieces share an elegant profile with beautiful curves and simple shapes. There are no collars adding to the uniqueness of the design, yet the pieces retain a Staunton familiarity. The red sandalwood is gorgeous with a blend of rich colors that range from coral red to dark burgundy. The boxwood is beautifully grained and with the ideal medium amber color.

The king is 4.4" tall and has 2 different finials that can be interchanged according to your personal taste. The queen has only 5 points with each point topped with a round finial. The bishop miter is not separated from the body with a collar yet is pronounced in its shape. The knight's retain their Staunton form with features such as the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth rendered and intricately detailed. The rooks are slender but have the traditional crenels cut into the parapet. The pawns have a unique elongated head with a pointed top.

The Gotham includes our Deluxe Chess Coffer lined inside with real billiard cloth. This two tray coffer is very large and designed specifically for our club size chess sets. The Gotham is truly a masterpiece in wood and belongs in all great chess set collections! (*Does Not Include Chess Board).

The profile of the king, queen, and bishop is extraordinarily elegant. The king features a small, traditional formee cross. The queens crown is turned thick and has points that will withstand the rigors of being carried around in a box. This is a magnificent chess set which epitomizes the struggles for domination between Christians and Muslims. This conflict has continued intermittently for over a thousand years, but it is the period between 1095 and 1292 which has captured our imagination because of the exploits of the Crusader knights.

Skillfully hand decorated, these pieces represent the Christian side led by King Richard I of England, known as Richard the Lionheart, in combat with the Muslim armies led by Saladin. This chess set concentrates particularly on the Third great Crusade led by King Richard I of England, who in 1189 joined King Philip II of France in an effort to recapture the holy city of Jerusalem. King Richard, with 8000 troops, seized Cyprus and some cities on the Palestinian coast, but ultimately failed to dislodge the Muslim leader, Saladin, from Jerusalem.
