The king is 3.75" tall with a 1.625" wide base and features a traditional formee cross. The pieces are triple-weighted to produce a low-center of gravity and exceptional stability on the chess board. The pieces are padded with thick green baize for a nice cushion when picking up and moving or sliding across the chess board. The pieces are individually hand polished to beautiful luster.

African padauk is one of the most colorful of the exotic woods and is often referred to as blood rosewood. Jaques of London has been instrumental in the development and success of modern chess. Chess pieces before the mid 19th century were of two kinds - excessively elaborate and costly hand-carved reproductions of the Kings court, or rudely turned and daubed pieces in which rank was dictated by height alone. In the 1840s, this all changed. Nathaniel Cooke, proprietor of the Illustrated London News, brought John Jaques a new and elegant design for chessmen. Between the two of them, this initial design was polished to produce a set using symbols (for the king, a crown, for the bishop, a mitre) which could be easily recognised and reproduced. This radical design received rave reviews in the press, particularly for the exquisite design of the Knight, based on sculptures from the famous Elgin Marbles. Mr Howard Staunton, the first British chess World Champion, was so taken with the design that he agreed to have his name and signature adorn every box of pieces. The Staunton chess set, as it became known, is now the de facto standard for play at all levels. This beautiful chess set in colorful red sandalwood and boxwood is our newest addition to our Staunton by Design collection. The Kohinoor, like the famous diamond belonging to the British Crown Jewels, is truly a gem within the realm of the chess set world.

The Kohinoor is impressively large with knights that are nothing short of spectacular. Hand carved by some of the world's most talented craftsmen, these rearing stallions standing atop pedestals, are rendered to perfection with features and intricate detail that is simply remarkable. The other pieces are no less impressive and together with the knights, meld into a rare and special chess set.

The king is 5" tall with a wide base and heavy weighting. A traditional formee cross is used that is removable and can be easily replaced if every needed. The queen is equally large with a crown that curves gracefully outward from the column to 11 sharp points. The bishop is tall with a large miter that has a wide slot forms from rounded corners. The rook is proportionately stout and heavy with a shallow parapet and 6 clean cut crenels. The pawns are impressively large standing 2.875" tall and having oversized collars that measure over one inch in diameter.
